Het is een spontane inval, maar de zon schijnt en een fietstocht van Eindhoven naar Geldrop is met dit weer geen straf. Ik ben nieuwsgierig naar de vier terrasflats die architectenbureau INBO begin jaren zeventig voor de Geldropse wijk Coevering Na een tochtje van 30 minuten verschijnt in de verte plots een van de vier terrasflats aan de horizon. Deze is omgeven door een zee van groen en steekt af tegen de stralend blauwe lucht. Gekleurde luifels deinen langzaam op en neer in de zomerse wind en geven het geheel een levendige uitstraling. Even later sta ik voor de flat en vraag aan een man die net zijn vuilnis in de ondergrondse container werpt: \u2018Woont u hier?\u2019 Met een glimlach kijkt hij me aan en zegt trots: \u2018Ja!\u2019<\/p>\n

Nee, Wout heeft er niet vanaf het begin gewoond, maar wel al zo\u2019n 23 jaar. En met veel plezier. Het was destijds een uitkomst waar hij wel een poos op had moeten wachten, vertelt hij spontaan. Hij woont er met zijn inmiddels 50-jarige dochter. Meer groen, meer ontmoeting, meer ruimte<\/h3>\n","text_right":"

De terrasflat is nu zo\u2019n vijftig jaar oud. Destijds inderdaad een noviteit waar flink over is geschreven. Nadat in de wederopbouwjaren was ingezet op het \u2018bouwen, bouwen, bouwen\u2019 van voornamelijk rijtjeswoningen en flats, groeit halverwege de jaren zestig de onvrede over deze aanpak. Door de woningbouw industrieel aan te pakken kon er weliswaar snel en veel worden gebouwd, maar er kwam ook steeds meer kritiek op de monotonie en de gelijkvormigheid van deze \u2018saaie\u2019 wederopbouwwijken.<\/p>\n

Een nieuwe generatie jongvolwassenen diende zich aan en zij wilden iets anders. Meer groen, meer ontmoeting en meer ruimte voor spelende kinderen en vooral ook andere woningen voor mensen die niet in rijtjeshuizen wilden wonen. Het moest toch mogelijk zijn om met de inzet van industri\u00eble bouwtechnieken ook gestapelde woningen te maken die aan deze uitgangspunten Eind jaren zestig gaat INBO aan de slag met dat uitgangspunt. Het architectenbureau was speciaal opgericht om op basis van industri\u00eble bouwmethoden woningen te ontwerpen, vandaar de naam INBO: INdustrieel BOuwen. In Geldrop, destijds een snelgroeiende gemeente onder de rook van Eindhoven, krijgt het bureau de kans om te experimenteren met de variatiemogelijkheden die industri\u00eble bouwmethoden bieden. De rijksoverheid stimuleerde deze ontwikkeling financieel via het programma Experimentele Woningbouw (1968-1980). In samenwerking met de gemeente maakte INBO voor het gebied Coevering-West een plan met eengezins- en drive-inwoningen, galerijen portiekflats \u00e9n deze innovatieve flats met terraswoningen.<\/p>\n

In totaal zijn er in de wijk vier van deze terrasflats gebouwd: twee voor de woningbouwcorporatie en twee voor een belegger. Opmerkelijk is de vari\u00ebteit aan woningen: met zowel maisonnettes als gelijkvloerse woningen van enkele of dubbele breedte.<\/p>\n

De doorsnedetekening hieronder laat de ruimtelijke opbouw goed zien. De balkons vormen feitelijk \u2018buitenkamers\u2019, zoals ze ooit in de planbrochure werden genoemd: terrassen met de \u2018ongekende diepte van drie meter\u2019. De buitenkamers zijn trapsgewijs geplaatst, waardoor ze volop zonlicht ontvangen. Bovendien hebben de flats ruime galerijen en collectieve binnenruimtes.<\/p>\n

Al hun hele leven in de flat<\/h3>\n","text_right":"

Via een olifantenpaadje wandel ik door het groen naar de \u2018terraskant\u2019 van de flat. Bij een voortuintje raak ik in gesprek met bewoner Jacob. \u2018Drie jaar woon ik hier nu en ik heb er geen dag spijt van\u2019, vertelt hij met een glimlach. Eerst woonde hij in een grote eengezinswoning, maar nadat zijn kinderen het huis uit waren kreeg zijn vrouw een herseninfarct: \u2018Traplopen zat er voor haar niet meer in, en ja wat moet je dan met zo\u2019n groot huis\u2019. Nu woont hij er met zijn vrouw ideaal, gelijkvloers en met een prachtig uitzicht op de groene omgeving.<\/p>\n

In de verte hoor ik kinderen zingen. Ze buigen over de balustrade en kijken nieuwsgierig naar beneden. Ik vraag of ze ook in de flat wonen. \u2018Ja\u2019, roepen ze in koor, \u2018al ons hele leven.\u2019 Ze blijken allebei twaalf zomers jong en vinden het een ideale plek. Nooit meer verhuizen<\/h3>\n","text_right":"

Bij de parkeerplekken zie ik een ouder stel dat net boodschappen uit hun auto pakt: \u2018We wonen al sinds juli 1978 in de flat. Kom maar even mee\u2019, stellen Rien en Tineke gastvrij voor. Samen lopen we naar de entree van de flat. Naast de lift wijst Tineke naar rechts: \u2018zelfs de burgemeester heeft hier aan deze gang gewoond.\u2019 Dat was in 1974 net na oplevering van de flat.<\/p>\n

Nu maakt de bewoonster zich af en toe zorgen over de \u2018nieuwere\u2019 flatbewoners. Zij nemen het soms niet zo nauw met hun woonomgeving: \u2018Ze komen en gaan niet alleen snel, ze zijn ook niet altijd even netjes in de gangen\u2019. Aan de muren van de corridor hangen foto\u2019s van flatbewoners, een grote kaart van Noord-Brabant, en er staat een biljarttafel in een van de gemeenschappelijke ruimtes. Binnen krijg ik van Rien en Tineke koffie en een rondleiding aangeboden. Via de wenteltrap gaan we naar de diepe woonkamer en het balkon. Inderdaad, dit is een heuse \u2018buitenkamer\u2019 met fraai
\nzicht op de groene omgeving en in de verte de kenmerkende koepel van de Geldropse Brigidakerk. \u2018We hebben veel aanspraak hier in de flat\u2019, vertelt Rien enthousiast. Samen met een aantal bewoners speelt hij bijvoorbeeld biljart. Aan verhuizen denken ze niet. De jaren 70-wijk de Coevering is in zijn geheel door INBO ontworpen, zowel de 4 terrasflats langs het riviertje de Kleine Dommel als de achterliggende woningen.<\/em><\/p>\n

De terrasflats zijn met de zogenaamde S200 ontwerpsystematiek uitgewerkt. Dit was een door INBO ontwikkeld systeem, waarmee gebouwen konden worden ontworpen met uiteenlopende woningplattegronden en verkeersruimten (galerijen, corridors, portieken) binnen \u00e9\u00e9n structuur.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ren\u00e9 Erven werkt als architectuurjournalist en is co\u00f6rdinator\/programmaker van Architectuurcentrum Eindhoven.<\/em><\/p>\n
